Rohan village

An overhead of the houses so far.
Not Middle Earth - Google Earth.

You're right. Bottom left is work in progress.

Rohan wooden roof

The previous house used up nearly two complete roofs
so I have walls only, for the next one,

I'll try overlapping wood using coffee stirrers.
Must have been some tree!

I've cut card to size for the next house
and snipped down the stirrers to match.
Then I've glued them, overlapping, like tiles.

We'll see how it goes.

The brothers not so grim.

Stop grinning, the pair of you.
This is a serious game!

Rohan Mead Hall finished?

Well, it went back together OK.

I say finished but I always spot unfinished areas
when I see them on the blog.

I think a little more brown wash on these roofs?

The top decoration is missing its gold paint.

Perhaps more colour on the planking?

Then there's the base.
I have a cunning plan.

Rohan in ruins?

The mead hall wasn't quite square so I put two pieces of sprue across,
at roof level, putting the whole thing rectangular again.

I'd glued on both porches, washed and dry brushed the roof - it was done.
Just a base needed.

Then I dropped it!!!

Charlie!

Thank goodness it's repairable.

Rohan second roof

This side, not at all bad.

T'other, not quite such a fit, the ridge being the problem,
but not at all bad.
I've not much Greenstuff left.
Might try the remains of the Milliput.

This side doesn't show a problem on the main roof.
You have to cut out a small piece when it rests on the 'new' walls.
In the first shot you can see that my cut out is a little too large,
so that it is just about visible.

Now I have all these wall pieces and no roof.
I'm hoping Super John's new hessian material will be useful.

Rohan roof joint

Putting together parts of a kit shouldn't compare in terror with rock climbing or swimming with sharks but trying to cut these roof parts to match them to the slope of the existing roof scared the pants off me.

The twit who already made six errors on something built many times before, could easily muck it up.

I used card as a template and then offered the parts up for alterations.
Only one needed, I think.

I've chamfered the edges to make the join less Greenstuff hungry.
I'll leave them overnight on the facia timbers
and make a test fit in the morning.
Fingers crossed.

Rohan Porches 2

Both porches nearly done with just the door knobs and decoration to do.
An even simpler design for the 'simple' porch
as I'd cocked up previously and used up the parts.

As before, I've used Mechanicus Standard Grey
and then dry brushed up through the gears
(Administratum, then Fortress)
I've used washes on some of the planks of the building
and will do the same on these porches.

The thatch is undercoated German Armour (Flames of War)
I think GW suggest Deathworld Forest which might look better.
I'll save it for Bree.
For the areas at the gable ends I've used Tallarn Sand,

Rohan porches

Slow going as I'm waiting for another roof section.
I'm due another box from Wayland Games today.
Meantime I assembled the porch for both doors.
The fancy one for the front and a simpler one for the rear.

I think this is cock-up number six.
I was feeling smug about my success
in imitating corner posts for the horse heads
when I realised I'd arranged this porch
to butt up against thatch.
It doesn't.
Twit!

Rohan open door

The open door experiment is literally rough around the edges
but with more care and decent lighting it would look fine.

Using an old hacksaw in a dark shed was not clever.

(Note the product placement!)

Another example of rushing things in less than ideal conditions.
How could I make the same mistake twice!

This 'Mead Hall' shape requires two complete roofs
which leaves a lot of wall pieces spare.

I'm not sure I like the two story idea but by having two stories
uses up spare walls and creates spare roof pieces.

I cannot do it with this one as I've already fixed the two gables.

I've sent for another box from the excellent Wayland Games UK
to provide the extra roof parts.

Rohan 'Mead Hall?' 1

Here's the start of Zorpazorp's second design.
The walls are easy but the roof joint might be a little more of a challenge.

I wondered at the entire community keeping its doors closed all the time
so experimented with an open one.
It lost width due to the uses of a hack saw
but I've made it up with a trimmed down horse emblem.
Green stuff also patched up an error.

Rohan saddle blankets

Horses now have blankets but one needs hitching to the pole.
I've received some Costa Coffee stirrers.
They seem better for the stalls that the ones used.
I may have to start again.

Rohan pond yard

The farm animals from Warlord Games are top class.

Though I've just noticed that these ducks both closed their eyes
as the photo was taken.

Detail at the Roahn Blacksmith's

A detail at the Blacksmith's with one of the horses still prancing about.

The other side with barrels lined up for passing riders of Rohan.

A game at last.
Actually Lewis and I tried a game last week too.
You can tell he's still trying to fathom the rules.
Good games though Lewis. That's two to you and one draw?

Grass round the Rohan Blacksmith's

Here's the Blacksmith's now that a rough lawn has been laid.
Note how the Wargames Atlantic horses do seem over large.
They are excellent sculpts though.
The major problem is that they will keep galloping around.
I can't see them ever getting shod.
(No, they are nowhere near finished)

Rohan Ducks due

Back with the fellow who keeps ducks.
I gave up on trying for a better pond and will stick with this one
which has about 8 layers of various varnishes.

Now with a grass surround and a few weeds it looks halfway decent.
Just hope the ducks approve.

Rohan Blacksmith's Stalls

A camera/computer glitch has prevented progress on the blog.
Pity, as models have been coming along nicely.
I'm using coffee stirrers for stalls for horses shot or in a queue.

Nearly there and the Blacksmith's now has the corrected roof support.

Stalls with a little 'soil' (Dark Earth) keeping them in place.
The stirrers are a little wide and they won't take grooves inscribed on them.
Tough.

Wargames Atlantic horses for Rohan

The Wargames Atlantic 'General Accoutrements' Horses are excellent in most ways.
The sculpts are good and the pack contains enough variables.
However, for my needs there is a slight problem.
They are required to wait patiently for the Blacksmith to shoe them
but all insist on galloping around the place, something I failed to consider!
They are also a little large compared with GW horses.

I'm still tinkering with the Blacksmith's.
I'm thinking of a couple of stalls
and a hitching rail for waiting horses.
I'll use coffee stirrers for the former
after rejecting cut down kit walls because of the door.
