To show that something is happening, despite birthdays and various invasions by little people, here's a start on the Dreadfleet scenery - one volcanic island.
Photo taken late in the day so not much to see.
I decided against 'dappling' the cliffs with the same colour grey that they were painted in (as suggested by WD).
Instead, I mixed plaster filler with a second coat of grey and when that was dry, gave it another coat to stop the filler rubbing off (perhaps mixing in glue might have helped)
Result is a rough surface that takes to dry brushing well.

A good idea, SON! The tiniest raised areas improve the effect of dry brushing enormously. The colour catches on the relief and creates a realistic tonal variation. I was going to sign off as follows 'XXXL' meaning 'Kisskisskisslots' but then realised I'd just be leaving my shirt size..............John
When first looking at the kit, I did wonder why they had made the rocks so smooth. There are only a few with any texture at all. But the scale of these things explains that. The ships measuring less than 3 inches are supposed to have hundreds of crew members so the rocks would appear flat. So then you have to add fine texture. Too fine for their manufacturing process.
When hurricane Jim passes, perhaps I can get a better shot.
The Russians are at it again with about 80 'hits'.
