Really New Ruins 10

Here are the tiles painted with that grey/green and laid as if broken up, mostly in doorways.

I should have laid the 'Dark Earth' first and then laid the tiles but I'll build up the Dark Earth before dry brushing.

It's all starting to take shape and we have plenty of rubble and damaged wall to sprinkle about.

To prop up the back wall we considered buttresses but abandoned that having realised that it's the side walls that will need buttressing more than the end one.

One of those GW statues would have been perfect and our headless substitute looks rather small to me.

Really New Ruins 9

We wanted a tiled look for the floor in this 'special' building.

In previous models I've assumed wooden floors that have long ago rotted.

I've used a plastic base previously containing raspberries or something and smeared it with a thick layer of glue/filler mix.

I backed it with thin card while it set to avoid lumps when the 'tiles' were laid.

The card did warp a little but we can glue it down.

Even if not, the floor might well have buckled since the city was abandoned.

I figured a different colour for the flooring and used that cocked up grey/green paint.

Not sure if I should varnish and, if so, before or after dry brushing?

Really New Ruins 8

Here's the tallest ruin we've tried.

Henry did all of the cutting and brick marking.

I just made a mess of the painting.

(I tried a colour mix using a very old pot with some recently purchased large bottles of black and white. It made green! A repaint job)

I've used Administratum not Dawnstone which I should have been doing on them all.
In front of the end (windowed) wall, I've put a couple of small steps, one badly damaged by a fallen piece of stone work.

I tried for foot wear on both but it looks more like wear and tear over the centuries.

Foam board has it's limitations.

Back on track

We're back on track with the largest ruin, now that the invaders have gone and we've found an essential part on top of the freezer in the garage.

Invaders

There will now be an adjournment probably lasting a fortnight as the invaders are here again. I'm keen to get on with some conversions, warriors of Minas Tirith to Osgiliath Veterans, but cannot, under a Dennis sized storm of little grandchildren.

Really New Ruins 7

Well, that's my job done.

Just gash heaps to sprinkle around the other Osgiliath ruins on the board.

Of course they could well be ruins just about anywhere.

At the foot of Amon Sul for instance.

Henry is still pegging away at his much more adventurous job and has a way to go.

Really New Ruins 6

Henry is tackling something very ambitious, easily the most complex model we've tried.

There are fewer components (walls) than with some of the others but the construction is more complex.

As it comes together, you'll see what I mean.

It is a slow old business.

Meanwhile, I'm tinkering with an idea for heaps of rubble on small thin boards.

These are polystyrene with some rocks and 'slate beach' glued on so far.

Later I'm thinking that glue filler mix would be better with the rocks/broken walls embedded in it.

Really New Ruins 5

Here are the two most recent models.

A hold up now as we (Henry and I) decide to do with the next board.

There might be buttresses involved.

Perhaps steps up to it.

I'm also thinking Tombs.

Here's t'other though not quite finished.

I have a cunning plan.

I've tried for a couple of puddles using glue.

Perhaps a little colour would help?

Really New Ruins 4

Continuing on one with a patio (well, why not!)

I confess that, if I were to start again, the buildings would be a much lighter colour.

Osgiliath was, after all, the original White City was it not?

The tree is an old tree root with foliage glued on then coated with 'Spray Mount' and sprinkled with 'moss'.

Really New Ruins 3

One I've worked on in the meantime, parallel with Henry, is shaping up.

There are cuts in the pavement as I figured an occasional chunk of rock that the Orcs didn't want might land there rather than wrecking a wall.

The holes are coated in Dark Earth and will be dry brushed as per the rest of the ruin.

Osgiliath Ruins (Henry) 2

Here's progress.

Base now coated with  Dark Earth and drybrushed with Administratum, then white.

Off cuts treated in the same way as the walls and then added along with rubble and with tufts and touches of grass.

A good result Henry.

Here's the man intent on his work.

Osgiliath Ruins (Henry)

I think I've solved the problem by a revolutionary new approach - I looked it up in the User Guide (when in doubt, refer to the instructions)

So, I may make some catch up progress later but here is the start of Henry's first piece of ruin.

Base plywood, walls foam board painted with glue/filler.

Tops and showing ends coated with thicker glue/filler mix.

The stone blocks were then marked out, scratched through the filler, then painted with Dawnstone.

The walls were then dry brushed with Administratum then white.

The same painting treatment was given to the 'pavements' (Cobble looking wallpaper, as use before)
