Ah, well, of course ! Sam suffered from Alopecia et pedes, a rare condition among hobbits. It is thought to have a genetic component. In other words, hairless feet run in hobbit families.
Sam overcame the problem by wearing custom-made rabbit fur foot toupees. In this case, in his hurry to join the fray he probably forgot to put them on. The Gamgee family motto was 'Sed Pedibus Nostris Calvi Hirsutis' Translation on request. John
