Here's the completed Doomwheel.
Sorry about the design of the banner which was lifted from a 1959 copy of Woman's Weekly on the pages titled, 'Knit yourself a Cardew the Cad Scarf from colourful remnants'.
I was not up to painting Skaven runes.
The 'soil' I've used is 'beach one' sand painted in Mournfang which is the closest I could get to the earlier Skaven.
Too dark but the best I could do.
They provide plenty of giant rats so I've retained a few for Blake's Warp Lightning Cannon which is up next.
Henry gave another lick of varnish to his riverside wharf and it's come up much better.
Another view of the Doomwheel.
Cotswold Bookstore has closed. This blog is now, simply, my LOTR record.

Skaven Doomwheel
This Skaven Doomwhell is the one for Gracie and made a nice change from the large ruins we've been making.
Here it is with a few bits yet to be attached and a number of rats who tag along for fun.
A closer look at how intricate it is.
Painting parts before assmbley is a smart move.
Also make certain the cogs are in the corrct place so that the large ones line up with the groove for the 'bridge' showing the rune.

Osgiliath Docks
This is what Henry has been up to, all his own work.
It's nearly done, just a coat of varnish and paint on the edges.
Can you guess what it is yet? (who used to say that?)
It's the dockside edge to Osgiliath and, I think, will look the part when finished and backed by ruins.
(The Anduin is fairly wide at this point, and deep too, so coastal seacraft would offload their imports directly to the city)

Mound Tower 2
Well, it's done but I'm not a fan as there's lots wrong with it.
The tower itself looks two 'chunky', the walls too thick for its size.
I've given troops precious little room to stand on the 'steps'* as I tried to disguise them by sloping at each level with filler mix. (*Not the actual steps which are too small to be used)
It's supposed to be standing as the city melds into the countryside and, beyond it, we can have country walls and fences.
I twigged another cunning plan when it was complete and painted the base area where the tower stood.
After some dry brushing, it can be used for anything else such as a statue, abandoned pool etc.
A round insert of cobbles and a few steps to a lookout point, perhaps.
And now, for something completely different.
It's ...
A Skaven Doomwheel.
I have two whole boxes of 'Island of Blood' yet to deal with, plus boxes of odd Skaven and a few items like the Doomwheel.
I promised the kids they could have them when they're finished.
I'd forgotten how fiddly these things can be.

Mound Tower 1
Trying to put a ruined tower atop a stepped mound involved many cunning plans.
Two tubes (both alike) one inserted into the other with aprox a 5mm gap between.
I've used bubble wrap and polystyrene to block gaps where glue/filler mix has to go.
The remains of one tube can be seen in the background.
There are three layers of soft polystyrene in this stepped mound.
They were too thick for each one to be a step as the resulting steps were about three foot rise.
However, putting two where there was one leaves not enough tread for bases.
It looks OK perhaps but is not game functional, rather like John's broken bridge steps.
The nails superglued to the wood were for marking brickwork.
That would have worked fine if the filler mix was still wet.

Osgiliath 'Complete'
The complete ruins.
Well, not quite.
We're thinking of a wharf, a canal, a bridge and a hillside ruin yet.

Really New Ruins 12
'Tis done.
A couple of carps.
The door should be arched and the long left wall should have a more irregular top.
As it is, it implies a rather strange shape to the building.
The last shot shows the end wall removed for storage.

Really New Ruins 11
The problem of how to support the end wall, which is detachable for storage, went through a number of ideas before I went for the statue.
The block in the first pic was going to support the rock on which he stands but I decided that the two layers of foam board were enough.
The additional pieces of damaged wall are also positioned to support the wall.
There's a healthy helping of Dark Earth under and above the foam boards which will take some time to dry.
The cling film is to stop the Dark Earth getting on the wall but I don't know if we'll be able to free it when everything is dry.
Then we plant some grass seed and wait for spring.
Just had an obvious though - MAGNETS!
